Is it a vegetable?.....

This week for science news Grace bought in an enormous cucumber that her Mum grew.

Mrs Ware told us that it was acutally the FRUIT of a plant because it had seeds inside it. We thought about all the other 'Vegetables' that were actually fruit like pumpkin, peppers and tomato.

We found out that things that most people call fruit have more fructose to make them taste sweeter.

Then Mrs Ware told us that the other 'Vegetables' we ate were

Roots (potato, carrot, kumara, radish etc)
Leaves (lettuce, cabbage, bok choy etc)
Flowers (brocolli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts etc)
Seeds  (corn, peas etc)

But where does onion fit in?.... and asparagus?.... and mushrooms?

.....so.... see if you can figure out what you are having tonight for dinner - who would have thought flowers could be so yummy!

Horrid Henry!

We have been reading a lot of Horrid Henry books by Francesca Simon recently.

This week we are writing poems about the main character. This is Emily's. Mrs Ware liked it because she had used sentences and it really sounds just like Henry!

Horrid little boy
Evil plans every day
Naughty constantly
Rude to his Mum and Dad
Yells, yells, yells and yells!

Sea Week - Rena disaster

Today Mrs Ware read us a book called 'Oil and Water' which was all about oil spils at sea.

We learnt about what can cause them, and what happens to all the fish, birds, animals and beaches afterwards.

We talked about the Rena diaster and some of us remembered a bit about it.

Here is a link to a recent article about the Rena disaster

Decoding strategies

Helping Hand

Lots of reading groups are working on decoding strategies. (figuring out tricky words we dont know when we are reading)

Here is the 'helping hand' we are using to give us ideas.

When we come to a tricky word at home please support us to figure it out ourselves using these strategies.

Sea week

This week is Sea week and the school library has some cool books and activities.

Come along before school to have a look! There is also a great website with some great events happening for families in Hawkes Bay this week.

Reading Awards

WOW! What an awesome start to reading this year.

Nearly everyone in the class got a collectable minion card for reading at least 12 times in February. This month it will be a bit more challenging with 20 times needed to get the next card.

Here is a picture of the wonderful people who read EVERY night ALL month to earn a 'Gru' card. Calais was so close as well, and unfortunately Emily missed out on being there for the photo.
